Against common believes, SEO seems to be the number 1 source for leads, for both both B2C and B2B markets, beating out paid search marketing and social media marketing, according to the latest 2011 State of the Marketing Report, a survey to online marketers.
Besides the number of leads it can generate, its QUALITY should however also be considered. In this sense, a SEO lead is far less involving than for instance a social media marketing generated lead. The endorser effect is less strong on SEO and therefore I could imagine the conversion rates into actual purchases should be far less impressive.
At the end of the day, the old equation REACH, COST, QUALITY is still valid. The best SEO is not only about rankings but about the process of making great web sites that earn traffic and convert visitors into customers!
